Suspect nabbed by UHP after Payson credit union robbery
The Utah Highway Patrol on Friday arrested a man on suspicion of the aggravated robbery of a Payson credit union earlier in the day.
According to a police report, at about 9:30 a.m. officers were dispatched to the Nebo Credit Union at 201 E. 100 North in Payson following a report of an armed robbery. The suspect was described as a black man wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, tan cargo pants and black shoes, and carrying a black-and-maroon backpack.
The report stated the man entered the credit union through the main entrance, pointed a gun at a teller and demanded money. After the teller provided some money, the man reportedly retrieved more money from the drawer, stuffed it into the backpack and fled out the main entrance, where he was observed getting into a champagne-colored, four-door vehicle with out-of-state license plates.
A UHP trooper reportedly observed a vehicle matching that description traveling northbound on Interstate 15 in Spanish Fork and stopped the vehicle in the parking lot of the Love’s gas station in Springville. A search of the vehicle turned up a black handgun and cash in the center console, including several bills banded together as if they had come from a bank.
Troopers searching the vehicle also reportedly discovered a black-and-maroon backpack containing money, a hooded sweatshirt and a fake rifle.
Credit union employees told the UHP they had given the robbery suspect “bait money” with recorded serial numbers, and the serial numbers found on the cash in the stopped vehicle reportedly matched.
The vehicle, a champagne-colored Honda, had Nevada license plates, and upon a registration check troopers discovered it had been reported stolen in Las Vegas.
Identification reportedly found in the vehicle included a U.S. passport and Colorado driver’s license bearing the name of Michael David Stafford, 29. While the identification photos matched the driver of the vehicle, he refused to give his name to the UHP.
The suspect was booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a stolen vehicle.
