Eagle Mountain standoff ends in suicide, man connected to possible Orem homicide
A standoff situation ended in suicide Monday evening after a man barricaded himself near The Ranches Golf Club in Eagle Mountain for more than two hours.
According to Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, the man took his own life after tactical vehicles moved into place at about 5:30 p.m. The four-door passenger car was approximately 45 feet in front of the golf course clubhouse, and negotiations had been ongoing for two hours.
With darkness approaching, officers were concerned the man in the vehicle, later identified as David Driscoll, 37, of Eagle Mountain, might try to escape and be a danger to the neighboring community. They then moved tactical vehicles into place and shined a spotlight on his car.
At that point, the man took his own life with what is believed to be a handgun.
During his standoff with law enforcement, Driscoll spoke with negotiators for almost two hours and also communicated with a family member. He reportedly told the negotiators he would give himself up. But at approximately 5:20 p.m. deputies heard the fatal gunshot.
When they approached Driscoll’s car they found him deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He never directly threatened deputies and there were no shots fired by law enforcement, Cannon said.
“There wasn’t much danger to the public before, but there is no danger to the public now,” said Cannon moments after it was announced the standoff situation was “resolved.”
According to officials, Driscoll had an extensive military background, so a bomb squad was called in to clear the trunk of the car. The bomb squad with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office cleared the car, and Driscoll’s body will be transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Salt Lake City.
According to the Orem Police Department and the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, the golf club was the second crime scene in a tragic day that also saw Driscoll emerge as the sole suspect in a possible homicide investigation that developed in Orem.
Cannon said officers were dispatched at 2:17 p.m. for a welfare check in Orem. They found a door at the Cherry Hill Apartment Complex unlocked and entered the residence. They discovered 27-year-old Brittany Engstrom on the ground. She had several gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
“They were boyfriend-girlfriend,” Orem Police Lt. Craig Martinez told the Daily Herald of the relationship between Engstrom and Driscoll.
In yet another twist on the story, the Orem Police Department said Driscoll was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing on four counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child.
Daily Herald reporters Barbara Christiansen, Katie England, Kurt Hanson and Genelle Pugmire contributed to this report.
