Russell M. Nelson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, speaks at the conclusion of general conference during the afternoon session at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City on Sunday, April 6, 2025.

A new Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints temple will be constructed in Spanish Fork, President Russell M. Nelson announced during the concluding session of the 195th General Conference on Sunday afternoon.

One of 15 temples around the world Nelson announced, the news garnered an audible reaction of excitement from some church members inside the Conference Center in Salt Lake City.

It marks the ninth temple either completed, under construction or announced in Utah County, and will be the second temple built south of Provo, after the Payson Temple.

Political leaders and other community members took to social media to react to the news.

“I couldn’t be more excited with the temple announcement today!” Utah Sen. Mike McKell said in a Facebook post. “Spanish Fork!!!”

“Driving through Spanish Fork 15 minutes after (the) announcement, looking at every field and wondering if it’s the future home of the temple,” Utah Rep. Karen Peterson said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Another X user, Todd Llewellyn, predicted the temple will be built on land he said the church owns near 100 South and Spanish Fork Parkway.

“Very short distance from Highway 6,” Llewellyn said in a tweet. “Super easy access for all of Spanish Fork, Mapleton and parts of Springville. Most importantly I could see the temple from my front porch.”

Other temples announced are as followed:

  • Reynosa, Mexico.
  • Chorrillos, Peru.
  • Rivera, Uruguay.
  • Campo Grande, Brazil.
  • Porto, Portugal.
  • Uyo, Nigeria.
  • San Jose del Monte, Philippines.
  • Noumea, New Caledonia.
  • Liverpool, Australia.
  • Caldwell, Idaho.
  • Flagstaff, Arizona.
  • Rapid City, South Dakota.
  • Greenville, South Carolina.
  • Norfolk, Virginia.

The news brings the total amount of temples Nelson has announced in his tenure as church president to 200, according to a release.

More temples are outside the United States than within, and the total number of temples announced, under construction or operating around the world is now 382.

Nelson expressed the importance of temple attendance for members in his Sunday afternoon address.

“Regular worship in the house of the Lord increases our capacity for both charity and virtue,” he said. “Thus, time in the temple increases our confidence before the Lord. Increased time in the temple will help us prepare for the Second Coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.”
