The Provo Utah Temple, which will begin reconstruction on Saturday, will be renamed the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the new name for the more than 50-year-old temple Tuesday.

The reconstruction of Provo’s first temple was announced during the church’s October 2021 general conference by President Russell M. Nelson while making announcements of new temples. Provo has a second temple, the Provo City Center Temple, which will be open while the other temple is undergoing construction.

In a press release, the church said the reconstructed Provo temple will be built to current seismic codes and will have “energy-efficient” electrical, heating and plumbing systems.

“Those desiring to receive their own ordinances should contact a temple in the surrounding area to make the necessary arrangements,” the church announcement stated.

Church members in the temple’s district are instructed to attend other temples “as their circumstances permit.” Along with the Provo City Center Temple, the newly dedicated Orem Utah Temple is open for members, along with four other temples in Utah County.

The rebuilt Provo temple will remain at its same location near the church’s Missionary Training Center and Brigham Young University.
