Alan D. Johnson has been named to a newly-created position as managing director of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.

In August 2021, the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square welcomed a new administration and significant organizational restructuring.

At the time, former Utah Gov. Michael O. Leavitt was named president, with counselors L. Whitney Clayton and Gary B. Porter, as part of the restructuring process. On Friday, that process continued with the announcement that Alan D. Johnson would be the first managing director of the choir.

“We feel Alan Johnson’s management experience and his strong interpersonal skills will be instrumental in leading the Choir organization to fulfill its mandate to inspire, uplift, and bring others to Christ through music,” Leavitt said in a press release.

The addition of a managing director will enable The Tabernacle Choir to work more effectively with senior leaders in other Church departments to usher in the initiatives announced by Leavitt and his counselors in February.

Those initiatives include aligning the Choir with the Church’s mission and missionary efforts, expanding the Choir’s digital audience and increasing its worldwide visibility.

Johnson has worked for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 2006, most recently as the director of the Museum Division in the Church History Department. He has previously served as director of the Church History Library and Collection Divisions, and manager of the Church’s Corporate Records Management Program.

In addition to his managerial accomplishments, Johnson brings to his new position over 40 years of experience as a musical accompanist, teacher, performer and leader. Johnson lives in Cedar Hills with his wife, Susan. The two have five children and two grandchildren.

Special Advisor Named

As part of his pre-retirement service, Scott Barrick, who has served as general manager of the choir since November 2001, has been named a special advisor to the choir presidency.

Barrick has been asked to assist in the transition of the choir’s organization. The choir is currently seeking a director of marketing and reputation.

“In making these organizational changes, we recognize that we are building on a strong foundation set by those who have served the Choir so diligently in the past and who are doing so now,” Leavitt said. “We are preparing for a future where we can fulfill a prophetic charge to accomplish things the Choir has never done before.”
