Hunter Sweeten cheers as he and his brother are announced the winners of the swamping competition during the cardboard boat regatta on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, at the Lindon Aquatics Center as part of Lindon Days. Children and adults competed in boat races and the annual swamping competition.

On March 24, 1924, the city of Lindon was officially incorporated. To celebrate this centennial milestone, there are fun activities planned all year that everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. The festivities began in February but will really kick off this month.

“We’re holding the unveiling of the Eric Dowdle painting of Lindon on Monday, March 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lindon Community Center. This event is really the big kick-off to celebrate Lindon’s 100th year as a city,” said Adam Cowie, city administrator. “The public is invited to attend the unveiling party and help us celebrate our centennial. Puzzles of the Lindon artwork will be available for purchase at the end of the event for $25 each.”

On April 13, a Healthy Lindon initiative will kick off. There will be challenges, prizes, races, hikes and events to help celebrate the centennial. In May, there will be a Centennial Arbor Day Celebration with the planting of a centennial tree and commemoration of a centennial bench. June will bring a Summer Centennial Party with games, food trucks, music, prizes and the dedication of a new time capsule for the next 100 years.

More fun and celebrating will continue each month throughout 2024. For more information about these, check out the city’s website at lindonrecreation.org.

Mayor Carolyn Lundberg said the centennial is a momentous occasion for the community, and she is excited to share the 100-year celebration. “Our Centennial Celebration on March 25 is a tribute to the people and the stories that have shaped our community’s history, our success today and our bright hope for the future,” she said. “We welcome everyone around to participate in all the yearlong activities connecting us together in this historic anniversary.”

Lindon is unique because it sits in the middle of one of the fastest-growing areas in the country, while still maintaining its small-town neighborly feel, according to Lundberg. “I am always so happy to meet people, whether longtime generational residents or those who have moved to Lindon more recently, and see just how excited they are to be living in our community and really appreciate the heritage, enjoying the lovely parks and recreation activities, the city staff, elected officials and first responders who serve and keep us safe — and, most importantly, the feeling of community connection,” she said.

According to Cowie, over the last 100 years, Lindon has gradually grown from its original 458 people in 1924 to its current population of about 12,500. “The largest growth spurt was during the 1990s and early 2000s,” he said. “Many residents feel Lindon has been able to maintain some of its small-town charm and identity as ‘a little bit of country’ by maintaining animal rights on larger lots and providing lots of parks and trails throughout the city. I think our founding Lindon families would be proud of what Lindon has become. It’s a beautiful city.”

During the last decade, the development of Lindon’s west side and 700 North commercial corridor leading to Interstate 15 has really been the growth-focused area, Cowie said. “The announcement and construction of the Lindon Temple has been a more recent source of excitement in the community. The primary road leading to the temple site, Lindon Center Street, is having utilities updated and will be resurfaced before the temple opens,” he said. “Many thousands of visitors will drive through the heart of Lindon’s residential area to reach the temple and will see for themselves what a charming place Lindon has become.”
