Janna-Lee Holland, spokesperson for the Provo Police Department, said that around 3:20 Monday afternoon, a public officer was attempting to serve civil eviction papers to a man — later identified as Jerod Agee — residing in a motel room located at 40 W. 300 South in Provo.
The constable told police they saw a gun and reported hearing gunshots in the room where they were trying to serve the notice.
However, authorities did not officially confirm if Agee had a gun.
Responding officers arrived on the scene and reportedly worked to evacuate other residents while they tried to get Agee to exit the motel room.
Efforts were unsuccessful at first, according to Provo police.
“The male subject refused to exit his room, or respond to officers’ requests for communication,” the release stated. “Members of Wasatch Behavioral Health’s Mobile Crisis Outreach Team attended the location to assist officers on-scene, along with police negotiators.”
The incident spiraled into a full SWAT response by 4:50 p.m. when units from Provo, Orem, BYU and the Utah County Sheriff’s Office responded to “pursue further tactics in order to apprehend the subject,” according to the release.
By 6 p.m., authorities had safely removed Agee from the motel room and he was taken into custody. He then was taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation and later booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of the following charges: trespass of a dwelling, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
