Vineyard man sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for murder of infant daughter
A judge sentenced a Vineyard man to 25 years to life in prison Tuesday for killing his infant daughter.
Alexzander Sean Berry, 29, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, a first degree felony, on Sept. 10.
Fourth District Judge Denis Porter said the devastation of the incident was “overwhelming” and told Berry he was not equipped to be a father, according to KSL.com.
“This child never had a chance at all, from what appears to be almost day one,” Porter said Tuesday at the American Fork District Court.
The victim, Alexis Menengwa Berry, died July 26, 2023, when she was 4 months old.
According to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Orem Fire Department paramedics responded to a report last year of an infant who was not conscious in her home in Vineyard. She was transported to the Timpanogos Hospital in Orem where she was pronounced dead.
Doctors found that the infant sustained severe blunt force trauma injuries to the side of her head, the sheriff’s office said. Berry initially told investigators he struck the infant in the head with his fist, choked her and struck her head on a crib wall.
The infant’s mother, Myra Jane Megan, 26, was sentenced to zero to five years in prison in June after pleading guilty to aggravated child abuse and obstruction of justice. According to the sheriff’s department, Megan took no action to stop the abuse and did not report what she saw to police.
