A Springville police vehicle is pictured. The Springville Police Department is advising the public to be on the lookout for a person of interest in a recent shooting that left one man injured.
At around 5:11 p.m. Sunday, officers were called out to an area near 1327 W. 50 North on a reported shooting, where a 35-year-old had been shot three times, a press release said.
The man was taken to Utah Valley Hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries are unknown but are said to be non-fatal and he is expected to survive, according to authorities.
Officers from multiple agencies including the Springville, Mapleton and Provo police departments and the Utah County Sheriff’s Office scoured the area searching for the suspect, who allegedly fled the scene heading north and then “got on a motorcycle and sped out of the area,” the release stated.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male approximately 5 feet, 6 inches tall wearing dark blue jeans, black hoodie, a black beanie cap and red high-top shoes.
“The suspect is still at large and should be considered armed and dangerous,” the release said.
It’s unknown if the shooting was targeted or a random act of violence.
Springville police also are looking into another incident of reported gunshots.
Citizens took to a local community Facebook page late Sunday night inquiring about what sounded like shots being fired in the Kelvin Grove area of the city.
Victoria Hamilton said she heard gunshots around 11:20 p.m. while she was in her kitchen.
“They sounded like they were extremely close to my home. I heard 18 shots, a pause and then 5 more shots. After those went off, all you could hear were sirens near my neighborhood a couple minutes later,” she told the Daily Herald.
Hamilton has lived next to Kelvin Grove Park, which is near East 4800 South and Wallace Drive, for about four years.
She said the area is generally quiet, so it was odd hearing such a loud sound so late at night.
“It definitely gave me a sick feeling in my stomach knowing that they were so close to home,” Hamilton said.
She added that it’s concerning to know there was a shooting earlier in the day with a suspect still on the run who could be armed and dangerous, in conjunction with what she heard Sunday night.
“What’s more concerning to me is that I didn’t see the police department post anything about the shooting, especially when they were telling a couple people in the neighborhood to stay inside and lock their doors when people asked police questions outside their homes,” Hamilton said.
Police say they’re aware of the reports from Sunday night, though it’s unclear at this time if the two incidents are connected. The department addressed the concerns on its social media account Monday afternoon, saying dispatch received calls from citizens hearing gunshots in the area of 1750 West and 1600 South.
Both Springville and Spanish Fork police received similar reports, according to the post.
When officers searched the area, they reportedly couldn’t find any bullet casings, victims or damage.
Authorities at this point said they can’t confirm if the noises heard Sunday night were gunshots.
“We can’t find any evidence to show that they are, but we’re not ruling it out,” Lt. Warren Foster of the Springville Police Department said when reached Monday morning.
Both incidents are said to be under investigation.
