Stephen Whyte is a Republican Party candidate for the House District 63 seat. Below are his responses to a six-question survey sent to him by the Daily Herald. This interview may have been edited for brevity and clarity.

1. Why is the position you are running for important?

I love Utah. Our state is a bright spot in our nation, and our neighborhoods are its heartbeat. The remarkable residents of Mapleton, Springville, and Spanish Fork are central to Utah’s success. I’m grateful for the trust they’ve placed in me to represent House District 63 over the past five years as we work together to strengthen our families, businesses, and communities. Serving in the Utah House of Representatives is a tremendous privilege and sacred trust. I remain committed to providing a strong voice for conservative, principled leadership. This position is very important as the Legislature creates the state budget, creates laws, and has oversight of how taxpayer dollars are spent. I will advocate, champion and represent your views as these important decisions are made.

2. What unique qualities, attributes, skills and experiences do you possess that make you the best candidate in this race?

My business experience, community involvement, higher education expertise, legislative leadership, and track record of public service equip me to represent House District 63. Throughout my career as I’ve lived and worked with diverse individuals and organizations in Utah, D.C., New York City and around the world, I’ve developed the skills to listen, build relationships, solve complex problems, and bring people together around common goals. As a small business owner, former tenured professor and associate vice president at UVU, and current Executive Vice President of University Relations at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, I understand the challenges facing families, businesses, education, and workers. Growing up on a family farm taught me the values of hard work, integrity, personal responsibility, and service to others. These are the principles that have guided my life and that I will continue to bring to the Legislature.

3. Please explain your priorities if elected, as well as why you believe you are uniquely capable of achieving those priorities.

Utah County’s population is quickly growing, projected to double in size in the next 30 years. How we manage growth will determine our quality of life and economic prosperity. My plan includes focusing on the 1) Business Environment, 2) Attainable Housing, 3) Natural Resources, 4) Education and Workforce Development, 5) Healthcare, 6) Transportation and Infrastructure. I am uniquely capable of achieving these priorities because of my extensive professional and leadership experience in our community and state. My experience in the Utah Legislature, including roles in public education funding and housing attainability, has given me firsthand knowledge of how to navigate complex challenges, build consensus, and advance policies that strengthen our communities. I am a collaborative, results-oriented leader who listens, works hard, and understands that our greatest accomplishments come when we work together to build a prosperous future for our children and grandchildren.

4. Please describe how you view the importance of compromise in politics and provide an example from your own experiences that highlights your perspective.

As we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, our Founding Fathers set an example of working together despite differing opinions and compromising, when necessary, to achieve a common goal. This lesson is timely in today’s divisive political environment. Effective leadership requires listening to different perspectives, finding common ground, and recognizing that progress may require compromise without sacrificing core principles. One example involves addressing the rising cost of living. One of my top priorities is helping Utah families keep more of their hard-earned money and lowering the cost of living. There are differing opinions about how to accomplish this. Through bipartisan collaboration, thoughtful discussion, and a willingness to find common ground, I’ve helped advance legislation that reduced Utah’s state income tax by 11%, saving taxpayers $1 billion; reduced the gas tax by 15%, saving $40 million; expanded childcare options through tax credits; and reduced Social Security taxes, saving retirees $24 million annually.

5. How will you balance the views of the vocal public, your political party, and your own understanding and knowledge as an elected representative (a challenge highlighted by issues such as data centers, water usage, redistricting, environment concerns, taxes, etc.)?

I love what our nation and state represent. Unfortunately, too much of our government is controlled by politics, personal agendas, or conflicts. Our Founding Fathers envisioned government of the people, for the people, and by the people on all levels. The purpose of a Representative is to represent you. This is the approach I’ve taken and will continue to take. I’ll listen to you, your ideas, concerns, and recommendations. I will represent and advocate for you. Regardless of the challenges we’re facing, I will balance the issue by using time-tested principles found in the Constitution, defend a person’s freedoms and rights, have conservative fiscal restraint in spending taxpayers’ money, champion limited government, and have integrity beyond reproach. I’ll thoroughly research the issues, work collaboratively with citizens, continually seek input, make decisions, and be accountable to you.
