Sanpete Challenge: Education vs Hunger

By Gloria Albrecht and Brianna Powell - The Pyramid | Nov 2, 2022

(l to r) the Snow College Badger is competing with Sanpete County high schools in a fundraiser for the Sanpete Pantry. The North Sanpete high school Hawk, Gunnison Valley high school's Spike the Bulldog, Sir Timmy the Templar from Manti high school and Timothy the Tiger from Wasatch Academy get ready for a heated competition

Manti High School has not had an active mascot for several years. It’s been said that the mascot would make an appearance here and there but was rarely seen. He seldom participated in school events and was not an active icon anywhere in the community. Something changed this year and Sir Timmy the Templar from Manti H.S. has had a fire lit in his soul!

Sir Timmy is a BIG fan of Cosmo the Cougar from BYU the Hawk from North Sanpete H.S. and The Jazz Bear (the mascot for the Utah Jazz) just to name a few. He wants to be as awesome and inspiring as they are, and he is making changes to be just that, doing everything from using TWO new tunics plus a sword and shield and making public appearances at elementary schools, Snow College and county parades! He’s been present at every football and volleyball game this year and almost every girl’s soccer game.

But this wasn’t enough for Sir Timmy! He wanted to sponsor an event, and knowing the need in his little Sanpete County, he chose to sponsor a food drive. His first idea was to just encourage his fellow Templars to help him in his cause. But just like Sir Timmy this year, that idea quickly developed into something so much more! Wanting to challenge his rival the Hawk from North Sanpete H.S., Sir Timmy realized that he didn’t need to stop there. So, he challenged all 3 high school mascots in the county, Sparky the Hawk, Spike the Bulldog and Timothy the Tiger to compete against each other for the most funds donated to the Sanpete Pantry. He quickly realized that he could still make an even bigger impact. He was determined to find a way to include the 3 to 4 thousand Badgers on the Snow College campus. One high school couldn’t possibly compete with the Badgers. But maybe, just maybe if the high schools worked together, they could be a force to recon with. And thus, the “Sanpete Challenge: Education vs Hunger” was born!

Four Sanpete County high schools — The Templars, Hawks, Bulldogs and Tigers have joined forces to compete against the Snow College Badgers for most money and food credit donated to the North Sanpete Pantry. Although the Badgers are taking monetary donations via Venmo and credit card they will have food and cash collection site in the Noyes Building. Some of the other high schools are taking cash and food donations along with the Venmo and credit cards as well.

In addition to this competition, the high schools are also competing against each other for most donated funds. For the high schools taking food donations, each individual food donation that is usable by the pantry (NOT expired, with intact packaging) will be equal to $1.00 to keep counting simple. The high school that raises the most funds will get to claim a trophy to display in their school. If a high school can beat the Snow College Badgers, a second trophy will take up residence within that same high schools’ trophy display case. If the Badgers win, they will get to show off the trophy in the halls of one of their campus buildings.

The hope is that this becomes a yearly competition, and the trophies can be passed from winner to winner. But it doesn’t stop there! Several of the high schools are doing internal class competitions to see which class can raise the most donations! Awards include bragging rights and a day of skipping class to watch a movie.

With the holidays quickly approaching, Sir Timmy the Templar is excited to see just what our Sanpete County students can do to help fight hunger in our little community. Sir Timmy feels that if the event brings in $100 and 10 pounds of food, that the event will have been a success! Joining forces with the other schools in the county to make a positive difference is an endeavor worthy of Sir Timmy’s time, attention and focus. He hopes the community will join with him to make a difference and even get in on some of the fun!

The food drive will take place Nov 7 thru 11. Winners will be announced in each school on Monday Nov 14. Community members are encouraged to participate and support their alma mater or area school via web donations at: https://sanpetepantry.org/donate Venmo: @Sanpete-Pantry
