Adults 18 years and older are invited to work on their swimming skills with the Sanpete Valley Masters Swim Team. In swimming, Masters simply means 18 and older. You don’t need to be an expert to join. Although the emphasis is on fitness, Masters Swim team members can also expect to receive coaching on stroke correctness at the swim events. The cost is $5 a practice or $40 for 10 sessions.
“U.S. Masters Swimming is a national membership-operated nonprofit that provides membership benefits to nearly 65,000 Masters swimmers across the country. USMS and its 52 Local Masters Swimming Committees (LMSCs) provide direct support to more than 1,500 Masters Swimming clubs and workout groups. Structure and organization of USMS programs vary and are driven by factors such as pool availability, instructor or coach availability, community support, and finances. The majority of locations offering Masters Swimming programs have coaches on deck. Coaches write workouts and provide feedback and instruction.”
Starting Jan. 7, Masters Swimming meets will take place at the Mt. Pleasant Aquatic Center. Everyone is welcome providing they can swim the length of the pool unaided. Every Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m., swim team members will have exclusive use of the pool with a swim coach at each practice. Call 435-262-1333 for more information.
In early March, the Mt. Pleasant pool is scheduled for a makeover with new replastering. The pool will be closed from March 20 to April 24. This regular part of pool maintenance will not only enhance the look of the pool, but also increase the structural integrity of the pool and create better grip on the pool surface. Masters Swim Team schedules at the Mt. Pleasant Aquatic Center will resume after the pool facelift is completed.
Sanpete Valley Masters Swim Team will also start meeting at the pool in the Snow College Activity Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8 to 9 a.m. starting Monday, March 6. Call 435-283-7039 for more information.
Starting Tuesday March 7, the Gunnison Swimming Center is also available for swim team members on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. Call 435-528-7126 for more information.
In 2022 the Mt. Pleasant Aquatic Center received a grant from the USA Swimming Foundation which allowed them to give away 50 FREE adult swimming lessons. An application has been submitted for a like grant for 2023 and could even include funding for kids if approval is granted. Expectations are for a final decision on the grant by the end of February.
