Music lovers and community members are invited to a special evening of harmony and tribute as the Bulldog Benefit Concert returns to the historic Casino Star Theatre. This year’s concert, scheduled for Thursday, March 13, at 7 p.m., will not only support the Gunnison Valley High School music program but will also honor the 30-year legacy of choral director Jody Allred.
Allred, a beloved figure in the South Sanpete School District, has spent three decades shaping young voices and fostering a deep appreciation for music. The Bulldog Benefit Concert will feature performances from GVHS’s elite choirs alongside Snow College’s premier vocal ensembles, promising an evening of exceptional musical talent.
This event marks a heartfelt tribute to Allred’s final year at GVHS, reuniting choral students from both GVHS and Snow College. The concert will be led by two award-winning conductors: Allred himself and Michael Huff, director of choral activities at Snow College’s Horne School of Music.
Throughout his career, Allred has led premier auditioned choirs at GVHS, including Cantus! — the school’s first-ever auditioned women’s choir — and Sonos, a mixed chamber and show choir. Under his direction, these ensembles have performed at notable venues, including Utah Jazz games, the Christmas at Temple Square concert series, and the reopening of the State Capitol Building. Nearly 400 students have been part of these choirs, contributing to their storied history. Allred, who holds a Master of Music from Brigham Young University, previously taught voice lessons and led the Chamber Choir at Snow College.
Huff, an esteemed choral conductor, leads multiple ensembles at Snow College, including the Cadence Chamber Choir. This auditioned group of 32 students performs a diverse repertoire, spanning classical, jazz, rock, and contemporary styles. Huff was the founding conductor of Utah Voices and served for over a decade as associate conductor of the Utah Symphony Chorus.
The community is encouraged to attend and show support for both Allred’s contributions and the future of the GVHS music program. Entrance to the Bulldog Benefit Concert is by donation, with a suggested contribution of $5 per person.
The event is made possible by the generous support of local sponsors, including Roland and Julia Christenson, Miner Foundation, Central Utah Radiology, Ensign Engineering, Kevin Rasmussen Excavating, Redmond Minerals, Rocky Mountain Power, State Bank of Southern Utah, Dr. Richard Nay, Robert and Jeannette Andersen, Jim and Suzanne Sanders, and in part by Creative West and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Casino Star Theatre Foundation, now celebrating its 20th year as a nonprofit organization, continues its mission to bring world-class entertainment to Central Utah while preserving its historic venue. The final event of the season will be an exotic bird and reptile show by Scales and Tails of Utah on April 28.
