Snow College’s ‘The Night Witches’ takes flight in intimate Black Box Theatre

By Staff | Feb 18, 2026

The Night Witches opened this week to excellent reviews! Seating in the Black Box Theatre is very limited, so you won't want to wait until the last minute to get tickets.

EPHRAIM — Snow College’s Department of Theatre is soaring to new heights this month as its production of “The Night Witches” draws strong early reviews — and quickly filling seats.

The show opened this week in the Eccles Center’s Haslam Black Box Theatre, where limited seating has created an intimate and immersive experience for audiences. With performances continuing Feb. 19-21 at 7:30 p.m., along with a Saturday matinee on Feb. 21 at 2 p.m., theater officials are encouraging patrons to purchase tickets early before performances sell out.

Written by Rachel Bublitz and directed by Jason Craig Smith, “The Night Witches” tells the gripping story of the Soviet Union’s 588th Night Bomber Regiment — an all-female squadron that flew dangerous missions during World War II.

A story of courage in the dark

Nicknamed “The Night Witches” by German forces, the women of the 588th flew fragile aircraft constructed of canvas and wood, conducting bombing runs under the cover of darkness. Their missions were relentless. Bombs were dropped every fifteen minutes in an effort to keep enemy troops on edge and deprived of sleep.

The production centers on Nina and Vera, two young women who have just completed navigator training and are preparing for their first combat mission. As they wrestle with nerves and uncertainty, the women around them offer encouragement — some lighthearted, some solemn — as they prepare to face the unknown.

But this night is different.

The enemy has introduced a new tactic, catching the regiment off guard and raising the stakes for everyone involved. Through movement, song and lyrical dialogue, the play follows the women through one harrowing and pivotal evening of the war, capturing both the intensity of combat and the unbreakable bonds formed among the squadron.

An intimate theatrical experience

Staged in the Haslam Black Box Theatre, the production places the audience close to the action, heightening the emotional impact of the story. The compact venue allows for powerful performances and a strong connection between cast and audience — but it also means seating is extremely limited.

Early attendees have praised the show’s energy and emotional depth, and word of mouth is spreading quickly across campus and the community.

The minimalist set and creative staging reflect the stark reality faced by the regiment, while the distressed red promotional artwork — featuring silhouettes of small aircraft flying overhead — hints at the tension and urgency woven throughout the performance.

Honoring unsung heroes

Director Jason Craig Smith and the Snow College cast bring to life the resilience and bravery of women whose contributions to World War II are often overlooked.

The real-life Night Witches flew more than 30,000 missions during the war, facing freezing temperatures, anti-aircraft fire and the constant threat of enemy pursuit — all while piloting planes considered outdated and vulnerable. Despite these challenges, they became one of the most highly decorated units in the Soviet Air Force.

Bublitz’s script blends historical inspiration with theatrical artistry, using music and stylized movement to explore not only the dangers of war but also friendship, fear, humor and hope.
