KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The United Soccer Coaches honored BYU soccer juniors Jamie Shepherd and Brecken Mozingo as NCAA Division I All-Americans. Both players picked up All-America Second Team honors.

After ending their junior season with a run to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, Shepherd and Mozingo received several recognitions each for their hard work on the pitch. Both girls were named to the All-West Region Team earlier this week, along with their teammate Lavani Vaka.

Shepherd’s recognition began before the start of the 2022 season as she was named to the WCC Preseason Team and the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. Throughout the season, she showcased her toughness on and off the field as one of the team captains, tallying seven goals, five assists and 19 points. Shepherd’s hard work and determination in the midfield earned her WCC Midfielder of the Year and All-WCC First Team honors.

Mozingo had a career season as she led the Cougars in goals (12), assists (10) and points (34). Taking an average of 5.78 shots per game, she found herself ranked No. 1 in the nation. Mozingo joined Shepherd on the All-WCC First Team following her successful season that helped the Cougars achieve an overall record of 11-3-7, and an unbeaten conference season, 6-0-3.

This year’s All-Americans will be recognized for their accomplishments at the United Soccer Coaches All-America Ceremony & Reception on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

Pro Football Focus named Freeland third team All-American

CINCINNATI — BYU left tackle Blake Freeland has been named to the 2022 Pro Football Focus All-America Third Team.

Freeland becomes the third BYU offensive lineman in the past three seasons to be named All-American, joining Clark Barrington in 2021 and Consensus All-American Brady Christensen in 2020.

The 6-8, 305-pound junior from Herriman, started every game for the Cougars in 2022. He has played a key role in an offense that rolled-up 5,286 yards of total offense–3,199 passing and 2,087 rushing. Freeland was named a preseason All-American by The Athletic and listed as one of the Top 100 College Football Players by Pro Football News. In addition, he was a 2022 candidate for the Outland Trophy and the Rotary Lombardi Award.

Including a Covid season in 2020, Freeland has been a four-year starter on the offensive line for the Cougars from 2019-22, including 25-straight starts at left tackle the past two years. Following the 2021 season, he was named All-Independent First Team by both Phil Steele and Pro Football Network.

He is the son of Jim and Debbie Freeland. His father Jim played linebacker for the Cougars from 1994-95 and his mother Debbie Dimond was an honorable mention All-American women’s basketball player from 1991-95. She is still the eighth-highest scorer in BYU women’s basketball history.
