By their own admission, the Lehi baseball team hadn’t been hitting the ball very well leading up to Tuesday’s Region 8 game against Mountain View.

That changed in a big hurry.

The Pioneers sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and scored eight runs, eventually finishing off a five-inning 15-2 victory at Lehi.

Jake Olsen had two doubles and four RBI — all in the first inning — and Jackson Brousseau bashed a two-run homer as the Pioneers broke out of their hitting slump in a big way. Lehi had six extra base hits in the game.

Mountain View jumped out in the top of the first with two runs. Dirso Menendez doubled with two outs and a pair of walks loaded the bases. Charlie Hill delivered a two-run single and the Bruins led 2-0.

That lead was short lived.

Olsen and Maddux Madsen each stroked RBI doubles, followed by Brousseau’s long ball to left for a 4-2 Lehi lead. Later, Olsen’s second at-bat of the inning was a bases-loaded double to drive home three runs and gave the Pioneers a commanding 8-2 advantage.

“We just needed to settle down,” Lehi coach Jason Ingersoll said. “I’m kind of glad that they got two on us so we could come out, work and compete. We’ve kind of struggled hitting lately and so I’m kind of glad that guys had better approaches. We weren’t putting balls in the air. We lifted some today that, thank goodness, left the ballpark but we stayed out of the air for the most part and we were using the middle of the field a little bit more.”

Lehi starter Dawson Rodak kept Mountain View (2-9 overall, 0-4 Region 8) scoreless on three hits in his five innings of work and Zach Evans had a two-run homer in the fourth to push the home team to the 10-run rule.

“We got punched in the mouth so we just had to come out and punch them back,” Olsen said. “The wind was blowing out today so basically we were just trying to catch a barrel and see if we can find a gap or whatever. We haven’t really been hitting the ball lately. But we’re just getting started because today we were really hitting the ball. Hopefully we can keep that going into the rest of the season.”

With Brousseau and Madsen both on the roster, Lehi (9-2, 3-1) certainly has two of the state’s top quarterbacks in the lineup. Brousseau threw for 3,237 yards 33 touchdowns, leading the Pioneers to the state 5A championship in November. Madsen, a Boise State signee, passed for 3,168 yards and 38 touchdowns at American Fork. Ingersoll said Madsen’s father took a new job in Lehi in January and the family moved into the school’s boundaries.

“After practice we go throw the pigskin around and have a little bit of fun with it,” Ingersoll said. “They definitely both bring a lot to the table as far as maturity and winning because they’re both very successful quarterbacks.”

The two teams will play Game 3 of their three-game series in Lehi on Wednesday and Game 4 in Orem on Friday.

Starting at $4.32/week.
