There’s accomplished and overwhelming dominant cross country programs, and then there’s the Mountain View boys cross country team.

The Bruins punctuated the program’s prestige considerably during Wednesday’s 4A state championships on Wednesday, scoring an all-time low in total team points while securing both the first and second-place finishes in the competition.

Breaking the tape was Bruin senior Kyle Chipman with teammates Daniel Anderson, Maverick Dutson and Jesse Eagar following up with second, fifth and seventh place finishes, respectively. The four runners helped compile a team final score of 27, which was almost a full 100 points ahead of second-place Pine View (121 team points.)

“We knew that we were going to be good coming into this. We had five seniors, so we knew this could be our best year, and yeah, we’re very pleased with our performance today,” Chipman said. “The lowest we’ve scored prior to this was 32 points, so we wanted to go out beating that mark, and we did it with our team score today. So we’re excited about that. This team is awesome and it took everyone.”

It also takes a hard work, as one could imagine.

“We practice twice a day,” Chipman said. “I love this team so much, and every single one of my teammates, and all of us put in the time to get here and do what we did today.”

For Chipman, his first place was particularly sweet after coming within a hair of winning the gold medal a season ago.

“I really wanted this, and I wish I could have had a bit better time, but a win is a win,” Chipman, who clocked a time of 15:17.56, said. “I know this course well because we’ve run it a lot of times no. It’s pretty hilly, so if you go out too fast the course won’t forgive that. So we made sure to start out in control and then really push it after the last hill. That’s where we knew we were going to open it up, and that’s what happened.”

Chipman and his teammates would know as well as anyone how to effectively run the course at Sugarhouse Park given that they’ve done it better than anyone for four straight years now while having the knowledge transferred to them dating back six years. It’s a level of dominance not shown by many programs in any sport, but there’s certainly good reason why the Bruins have reached the level they have.

“A lot of it is our coach, Michael Strauss. He’s the best coach out there,” Chipman said. “And then there’s the culture. My older brother was on the first team that won state and then that just keeps being passed down and it’s been awesome. I’ve loved every minute I’ve had in this program and this was a great way to finish all of it off, with me winning first, but more importantly our team finishing with our lowest point total ever. We wanted it and we got it.”
