BYU sophomore Isaiah Glasker makes a tackle during the Big 12 game against Kansas at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024.

BYU football beat writer Jared Lloyd gives his grades for the Cougar position units and coaches for Saturday’s game against Kansas at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo:

Quarterback

Jake Reztlaff made some good throws and runs, but certainly wasn’t consistent. He missed a couple of open deep passes and the fade route at the end of the half was too easily intercepted. For the first time this season, he couldn’t find a way to get the job done in the final minutes.

Grade: D+

Running back

BYU leaned on LJ Martin and Hinckley Ropati, who were up for the challenge but couldn’t seal the deal. Martin finished with 76 yards rushing, while Ropati ended up with 35 as well as the only Cougar TD on a 30-yard pass. Sione Moa had a couple of decent runs as well.

Grade: C+

Wide receivers/tight ends

Both Chase Roberts and Keelan Marion had catchable passes get away from them, but they also came up with big receptions. There appeared to be a couple of occasions where the receivers and Retzlaff weren’t on the same page. This unit also helped with blocking downfield in the run game.

Grade: C+

Offensive line

This unit had times where it opened up huge holes in the run game or gave Jake Retzlaff time to find receivers — and times where it failed, particularly in the red zone. The final false start penalty was costly as well. Just too many mistakes in the trenches in this one.

Grade: D+

Defensive line

Tyler Batty was all over he field and forced a couple of quick throws, including the one that ended up being intercepted. The Cougars gave up a few big runs, but for the most part did well against the Kansas rushing attack, holding the Jayhawks to just 73 yards.

Grade: B-

Linebackers

Harrison Taggart frequently came up and filled gaps, while Jack Kelly and Isaiah Glasker also made some key plays to give BYU a chance. There were some missed tackles and times where the linebackers let receivers get open, but they were solid overall.

Grade: B

Secondary

Marque Collins made up for a couple of missed plays by getting an interception, while Mory Bamba had a big third-down pass breakup. Kansas ended up with 169 passing yards but the Cougar secondary held them in check for much of the contest. The most unfortunate play came on the QB punt where it hit Evan Johnson and Jakob Robinson couldn’t corral it.

Grade: B-

Special teams

This unit didn’t have a game-changing play, but can’t really be blamed for the punt mishap. The BYU coverage team did well, Will Ferrin hit his field goals and the Cougar punting was decent. Keelan Marion had one big return past the 30-yard line and another that was stopped short of the 20.

Grade: B+

Coaching

BYU’s defensive coaches made some adjustments and the Cougars settled in, keeping the Jayhawks from pulling away. The offense, however, was a completely different story. BYU made some head-scratching play calls, going away from the pass and insisting on running wide in the red zone where the compressed defense bottled them up fairly easily. Certainly not the best execution, but the decision-making was suspect as well.

Grade: D+
