Five true facts about … SMU football
Each week the Daily Herald will provide five true facts about BYU’s latest football opponent for your enjoyment. This week, Southern Methodist University.
One
The university community voted on a mascot in the fall of 1917, with “Mustangs” winning out over Bison, Greyhounds and Pioneers. The nickname was credited to Miss Dorothy Amann, the school president’s secretary. She was struck by the idea when watching the team practice from her office in Dallas Hall: “Why, out there, on the football field, it looks like just a bunch of wild Mustangs.”
Two
In 1935, SMU posted a 12-1 record and was named national champions. However, there were five different national champions picked that year by seven different selectors, all math-based systems. Two of those entities, the Dickinson System and and the Houlgate System, picked the Mustangs.

At SMU, they like to say they don’t tailgate — they Boulevard. Before home football games, students, alumni and Mustang fans socialize up and down Bishop Boulevard.

Famous alumni of SMU include former First Lady Laura Bush, golf champion Bryson DeChambeau, actress Kathy Bates and Pro Football Hall of Fame member Eric Dickerson.

The Mustang Band is known as “The Best-Dressed Band in the Land” and has more than 29 different uniform combinations. The band will wear one uniform during the pregame performance,then change just before halftime into another one.
