Big 12 releases league schedule for BYU men’s, women’s hoops
BYU’s second season in the Big 12 will be just as challenging as the first.
No big surprise there: The league is regularly atop the NET Rankings with Quad 1 and Quad 2 games everywhere you look.
On Thursday, the Big 12 released the 2024-25 schedule consisting of 20 games, two more than last season. The Cougars host former WAC foe Arizona State in their league opener on New Year’s Eve, the first time the two teams have met in Provo since 2009.
Then comes a grueling run through the next two months as teams jockey for position in the Big 12 Tournament and possibly the NCAA’s.
BYU navigated through the league to a fifth-place tie last season, went 1-1 in the Big 12 Tournament and earned a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tourney.
A lot has changed since last March, including Mark Pope leaving for his dream job at Kentucky and the Cougars welcoming the NBA’s top assistant, Kevin Young, to take his place. Young’s offseason of recruiting has been stellar but the players are a bit of a mystery since the only glimpses of the team have been on social media video posts. There are seven players who are donning the blue and white uniforms for the first time.
BYU fans will get their first live look at the team on October 9 in the Blue & White Game and the Cougars also have an exhibition against Colorado Christian on October 30 before officially opening the preseason with Central Arkansas on Nov. 5.
One of the highlights of the Big 12 slate is the first-ever meeting in the Marriott Center with Kansas on February 19. Last year, the Cougars went to Lawrence and pulled off a 76-68 upset of the No. 7 Jayhawks.
After the opener against the Sun Devils, the Cougars head to Houston on Saturday, Jan. 4, for the first time since TJ Haws’ game-winner during the 2019-20 season. They return home to host Texas Tech on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
The Cougars put their 17-game win streak over TCU on the line on Saturday, Jan. 11, when they make their first trip to Schollmaier Arena since a 79-56 victory on Feb. 19, 2011.
Oklahoma State comes to town on Tuesday, Jan. 14, before BYU heads up north to take on Utah on Saturday, Jan. 18. It will be the first conference showdown between the two rivals since a Mountain West Conference matchup on Feb. 12, 2011, a 72-59 victory for the Cougars.
A trip to the Centennial State on Tuesday, Jan. 21, to face Colorado is followed by BYU’s first two-game homestand in conference play. Saturday, Jan. 25, will be the fifth all-time meeting against Cincinnati, with Baylor making its ninth trip to Provo on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
Three of the Cougars’ next four games will be on the road, all taking place in the Eastern Time Zone. BYU heads to the site of its first-ever Big 12 win, UCF, on Saturday, Feb. 1, before hosting Arizona at the Marriott Center on Tuesday, Feb. 4. They make their first trip to Cincinnati since 1931 on Saturday, Feb. 8, followed by a matchup between first-year head coaches on Feb. 11 at West Virginia.
BYU returns to the friendly confines of the Marriott Center for two straight, beginning with Kansas State on Saturday, Feb. 15. The Jayhawks of Kansas make their second trip to Provo and first-ever visit to the Marriott Center on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
The Cougars begin a two-game road trip with a return to the McKale Center to face Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 22, for the first time since Jimmer Fredette’s 49-point performance. They face Arizona State on Wed., Feb. 26, in Tempe, Arizona, before hosting West Virginia in Provo for the first time on Saturday, March 1.
BYU concludes the regular season at Iowa State on Tuesday, March 4, and home against Utah on Saturday, March 8.
The Big 12 Conference Tournament will take place on March 11-15 at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
Tip times and television designations will be announced at a later date.

BYU Women’s Basketball
The Big 12 Conference also announced the 18-game slate for BYU women’s basketball’s second campaign as a member of the conference on Thursday morning.
“This schedule and every schedule in this conference is going to be a gauntlet,” said BYU head coach Amber Whiting. “We are going to go toe-to-toe with the best of the best, so we need to bring it every night out. That is what being one of the best conferences in the country is all about.”
The Cougars finished 16-17 overall and 6-12 in Big 12 play last season, earning a WNIT bid. BYU was busy in the offseason and welcome nine new players to the roster.
Whiting is entering her third year at the helm of the BYU program that will welcome Big 12 newcomer Arizona to the Marriott Center to kick off conference play on Dec. 21. The last meeting between the two teams came on March 24, 2021, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. That night, BYU fell by six to the eventual national semifinalist Arizona Wildcats.
The Cougars will then embark on their east-coast swing with a New Year’s Day matchup at Cincinnati before heading further east to take on West Virginia on Jan. 4. BYU will then return to the Marriott Center for back-to-back home games against Houston and Kansas State on Jan. 8 and 11, respectively.
After the homestand, the Cougars will play two-straight road games against Texas Tech on Jan. 18 and Iowa State on Jan. 22.
Following the road trip, BYU will renew its rivalry with the Utah Utes on Jan. 25 at the Marriott Center in the first Big 12 matchup between the two teams. The last time the Utes and Cougars met as conference foes came in a 50-49 loss in the Mountain West Conference tournament on March 11, 2011.
BYU will then complete the newcomer trifecta with games against newcomers Arizona State and Colorado. The Cougars will first host the Buffaloes on Jan. 29 before heading to Tempe for a date with the Sun Devils on Feb. 1.
The last meeting with Colorado came on March 22, 2003, in an 84-45 loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. BYU last faced off with ASU on Nov. 17, 2021, as the Cougars downed the Sun Devils 55-44.
On Feb. 5, UCF will make its inaugural trip to Provo after BYU handed the Knights a 64-60 loss a year ago in Orlando in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The Cougars will then make their first trip to Baylor’s new Foster Pavilion to take on the Bears on Feb. 8. Whiting earned her first career win over a ranked team against No. 18 Baylor last season.
BYU will stay on the road to take on the TCU Horned Frogs on Feb. 11 before returning to the Marriott Center for a date with the Oklahoma State Cowgirls on Feb. 15.
After the brief stop at home, the Cougars will be on the road again for their second matchup with the Arizona Wildcats on Feb. 19. After its trip to Tucson, BYU will return home to host Arizona State on Feb. 22 and Kansas on Feb. 25 in the final two home games of the 2024-25 campaign.
The regular season finale will come on March 1 as BYU will head 45 minutes north to take on the Utah Utes.
The Big 12 Conference Tournament will be held at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo., March 5-10, 2024.
“I’m really excited about what this team can do this year as I’ve seen their chemistry grow both on and off the floor this summer,” said Whiting. “This is a really competitive group that pushes each other every day to be their best which is encouraging going into our second run at the Big 12.”
