Just how good was BYU at the plate against No. 23 Arizona State on Thursday?
The Cougars best hitter — sophomore first baseman Ezra McNaughton — went 0-for-5 but the home team still banged out 18 hits in 19-9 run-rule victory at Miller Park.
“I think it takes everybody,” said senior outfielder Bryker Hurdsman, who was 4 for 4 with a double, a homer and five RBI. “We’ve got a lot of guys that can swing it, so everybody’s kind of a weapon and and that’s what’s nice about our offense. I think that’s kind of just the lingo going around is that, hey, everybody rakes. And it doesn’t take me, it takes all of us, so we’re all going well, and it’s been fun.”
BYU, which has won six straight games, put up terrific numbers both individually and collectively against the Sun Devils.
In addition to Hurdsman’s day, junior shortstop Ryder Robinson was 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, two RBI and four runs scored. Sophomore outfielder Tua Wolfgramm knocked in three runs and homered as well.
Nobody could keep up with the Joneses as junior Easton and freshman Cooper combined to finish 6 for 7 with four RBI, one double and two triples against their father’s old team. Mitch Jones played for on season at Arizona State before getting selected in the seventh round of the MLB Draft in 2000.
The Cougars combined for 11 extra-base hits (seven doubles, two triples and two home runs) and scored multiple runs in five of the six innings played.
“We hit some balls hard today and that kind of got contagious a little bit through the lineup,” said Cougar coach Trent Pratt, who also played his college ball at Arizona State.
BYU took control right from the start against lefty Easton Barrett, who prepped at Springville High School. Luke Anderson led off with a double to left center and Robinson doubled to left to score Anderson. Hurdsman drove in a run with a single and moved Wolfgramm to second. A double steal advanced both runners up a base, where Wolfgramm later scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.
ASU trimmed the deficit to 3-2 but the Cougars responded in the bottom half of the third with four runs on four hits and a walk. Easton Jones singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a double down the third base line by Hurdsman. After a Cooper Jones walk, Ryker Schow’s sacrifice fly moved both runners up a base, scoring Jones. Parker Goff singled to left to score Cooper Jones from second. Anderson doubled down the left field line to score Goff from first for a 7-2 lead.
BYU took a 10-2 lead after four and plated five runs in the fifth, the highlight a three-run homer from Hurdsman, for a 15-4 advantage.
Wolfgramm then doubled off the left field wall to score Robinson and move Jones to third. Both scored on Hurdsman’s home run over the centerfield wall for a 15-4 lead.
The Cougars made the score 19-5 with four more runs in the sixth. Robinson knocked in a run with an RBI triple, followed by Wolfgramm bashing his third home run of the year for two more runs. Cooper Jones then tripled to center to score Hurdsman, who had been hit by a pitch.
ASU ended the scoring in the top of the seventh with four runs on a solo home run and three-run triple but the game ended with the third out on the ten-run rule.
Lefty starter Wayland Crane (1-2) went four innings for the win, surrendering three runs while striking out five.
With the win BYU moves to 20-16 overall and 9-7 in Big 12 play, good enough to tie for fourth with two games to play in the series with Arizona State.
“We knew they are a good team,” Hurdsman said. “We know we have our work cut out for us but we know we’re a good squad. If we just play for one another and play the game hard and fast, we’re just focused on that, and it’ll end up good.”
