Getting off to a good start can make a big difference when a favored team is facing an underdog with nothing to lose.

Rarely, however, does one player take it one themselves like Timpview senior Aiden Rawle did for his No. 10-seeded Thunderbirds in Tuesday’s 5A first round boys lacrosse match in Provo against No. 23-seed Timpanogos.

Rawle was aggressive from the start and it paid huge dividends as he scored a jaw-dropping four goals in the first five minutes of action.

That would’ve been enough by itself, thanks to excellent play from the Timpview defense, as the Thunderbirds cruised past the Timberwolves, 20-2.

“After that start, I was thinking he (Rawle) was going have 20,” Timpview head coach Taylor Redd said. “He’s awesome. He does a great job for us. He’s a senior leader but he also does a lot of things that help everyone else do well around him. Today, he was finishing a lot. A lot of times he’s kind of the guy behind the scenes doing a lot of the dirty work. Getting those goals early really just set the tone for for what we wanted to do.”

Redd like how his team approached the game, even though it had defeated Timpanogos 18-2 and 20-4 during Region 8 play.

“I think they came out just fired up, which was good,” Redd said. “We talked a lot about just kind of building everyday towards the rest of the postseason. We just kind of came out and and took the first step towards doing what I want to do throughout the rest of the playoffs.”

He also had plenty of positive things to say about his defense, which gave up just one goal in the first three quarters.

“I thought our defense played well,” Redd said. “It’s led by Grant Rice but we also have a bunch of really good poles. We played two goalies kind of split and both of them were lights out. We’re really starting to get into the groove and to gel as a unit, which has been really good.”

Timpview now heads on the road to play at No. 7-seed Bountiful, which is just the start of the strong teams it could be matched up against the rest of the way.

Getting past the first game, however, is always nice.

“I think first off, it just gives us confidence,” Redd said. “We really want start the right way. I felt that we did that, felt like we didn’t leave any doubt for all 48 minutes. We saw a lot of success offensively and we saw a lot of success defensively. That just kind of gives us the right confidence.”

He said the key for his squad moving forward is to give everything they’ve got for the team.

“It only goes as far as you work,” Redd said. “I think that’s the biggest thing. I thought we worked really hard we flew around the field, so I hope we bring that to all the rest of our games moving forward.”

The Thunderbirds are scheduled to play the Redhawks at 4 p.m on Thursday with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.

Starting at $4.32/week.
