As anticipated, Utah County is well-represented in each bracket, holding down the No. 1 seed in each competition. Those No. 1 seeds are American Fork (19-4) in 6A baseball, Maple Mountain (23-1) in 5A baseball and Salem Hills (22-4) in the 5A softball championships.
Here’s a look at each of those three championship brackets:
6A Baseball
The aforementioned Cavemen and No. 2-seeded Pleasant Grove (21-4) have a storied rivalry and it will surprise no one if either team are the last two teams standing come the finals round which will be held at Utah Valley University. Following relatively disappointing runs in the 6A championships a season ago, both the Cavemen and Vikings look primed to validate their respective seedings.
“We’re an older team this year,” said Pleasant Grove Coach Darrin Henry. “Last year, we were getting all the experience with these same guys. We were hoping to really roll into this. We played a lot of winter ball so we could make sure that we had some good momentum.”
American Fork will play the winner of Westlake (No. 16) vs Farmington (No. 17) while Pleasant Grove will take on either Copper Hills (No. 15) or Weber (No. 18.)
Other top seeds from Utah County are No. 8-seeded Skyridge (14-10), which will take on Bingham (No.9) in the first round, defending state champion and No. 10-seeded Lehi (13-12), which will take on Corner Canyon (No. 7) and No. 12-seeded Lone Peak (11-14), which will square off versus Riverton (No. 5.)
5A Baseball
Maple Mountain took the 5A championship a season ago and looks to present at least as dominant of a team a year later. But anything can happen in tournament competition, a fact Golden Eagles Coach Justin Thomas is well aware of.
“Winning a state championship is never easy,” said Maple Mountain Coach Jeremy Thomas. “It’s a big challenge, but we feel region play has helped prepare us for the state championship, just because the quality of play has been so high every week with what we take on.”
Fortunately, for Thomas, he believes he has just the type of team to take the necessary mindset, and as importantly, put forth the work necessary to repeat as champions.
“We have a team of guys that want to be here working every day. They enjoy all of it. Even when they’re not here working they want to be here,” he said. “We have a group of kids that grew up loving baseball, and then younger kids that learn from those older kids. When you have that you have something special.”
The Golden Eagles will take on the winner of Skyline (No. 16) and Bountiful (No. 17) in the second round after being afforded a first-round bye.
Orem (16-9) is the other Utah County team granted a first round bye as the No. 6 seed in the tournament. The Tigers will take on either Jordan (No. 11) or Roy (No. 22) in the second round.
No. 12-seeded Wasatch (14-11) will take on No. 21 seed Cedar Valley in the first round, No. 14 seed Springville (11-14) will try and get by No. 19 seed Salem Hills (10-15) in the same round while No. 20 seed Spanish Fork (9-16) will square off versus Clearfield (No. 13.)
5A Softball
The Skyhawks roll into the postseason playing some high-level softball led by dominant pitching from Jocile Norman from the circle and top hitting from players like Camryn Guest (.605 batting average), Aliyah Elmer (.484) and Emmery Wilson (.457) from the plate.
“Last year we started five freshmen and now they’re sophomores, and they’re not scared of the big moment,” said Salem Hills Coach Kaleb Stokes. “They want that opportunity to get up in those moments because they all believe in each other. This is a team that stays calm and collected when pressure situations hit.”
Salem Hills will take on either Brighton (No. 16) or Wasatch (No. 17) in the second round.
Other Utah County teams earning first round byes are No. 6 Springville (18-6), which will take on the winner of Cedar Valley (No. 11) and Skyline (No. 22) and No. 7 Maple Mountain (18-8), which will take on either Cyprus (No. 10) or Kearns (No. 23.)
