Timpanogos Storytelling Festival to welcome hearers and listeners of all ages

By Karissa Neely daily Herald - | Sep 2, 2018

It’s that time again. Time to relax in the beauty of Ashton Gardens at Thanksgiving Point, and bask in the narrative weaving of the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival.

The Timpanogos Storytelling Festival, a gathering of some of the best yarn spinners in the world, kicks off at 6 p.m. Thursday with the evening storytelling concert. This is a chance to hear from this year’s featured storytellers — some old crowd favorites, like Donald Davis and Kim Weitkamp, and gifted talkers like Sheila Arnold, Spencer Bohren and Adam Booth, who are new to the Utah festival — in just one evening.

The festival continues Friday and Saturday. Audiences will hear from storytellers from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, with a dinner break each day from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Each day includes daytime tales, followed by special themed evening events.

Debi Richan, festival executive board member, has been a part of the festival almost since the beginning. She said she is excited about “getting in the tents” and hearing from the many different storytellers. The festival will have youth storytellers from all over the nation, as well as well-known professionals from all over. She loves the accents of Daniel Morden and Clare Murphy, who hail from Wales and Ireland respectively. She also is excited that Kevin Kling, known for his work on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” is back this year.

“I’m excited. Every time he comes, he’s just so much fun,” Richan said.

Ticket prices range from $8-12 for select evening programs to $30 for a one-day pass and $50 for the weekend festival. Children and seniors have discounted pricing.

Those dreaming of someday taking the stage can also learn from master storytellers from 9 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. Thursday during the Timpanogos Storytelling Conference in the Garden Room of the Visitor’s Center at the Ashton Gardens. Conference tickets start at $90 for adults.

Starting at $4.32/week.
