Tucker Smith focuses on public education, housing affordability in the campaign for Senate District 23
Tucker Smith is a Democrat candidate for the House District 62 seat. Below are his responses to a six-question survey sent to him by the Daily Herald. This interview may have been edited for brevity and clarity.
1. Why is the position you are running for important?
The Utah State Legislature provides key funding to public education, public transportation, and many other things. It is also tasked with regulating businesses and corporations within the state of Utah. As a State Senator, I would be tasked with ensuring that funding for crucial government services doesn’t dry up and that the quality of life for all Utahns improves.
2. What unique qualities, attributes, skills and experiences do you possess that make you the best candidate in this race?
I am a public educator, and I have a deep love for public education. I will listen to the concerns of Utahns and treat those concerns with the care and respect they inherently deserve.
3. Please explain your priorities if elected, as well as why you believe you are uniquely capable of achieving those priorities.
I will fight for $1 billion more to public education every year. I will fight for funding for universal childcare and Pre-K. I will fight to bring housing costs down and wages and salaries up so that housing only costs 30% or less of a household’s income. I will fight for taxes that don’t burden low and middle income families, such as a progressive income tax and a wealth tax. I will fight for campaign finance limits to curb funding of politicians by the wealthy.
4. Please describe how you view the importance of compromise in politics and provide an example from your own experiences that highlights your perspective.
Compromise is essential, which is partly why having a Republican supermajority is so toxic. They don’t need to compromise, and it’s created some truly toxic legislation that has worked to cement their power and lack of accountability further. The recently created constitutional court that’s accountable only to the legislature is key evidence of a Republican supermajority that is only concerned with dodging checks on its own power.
5. How will you balance the views of the vocal public, your political party, and your own understanding and knowledge as an elected representative (a challenge highlighted by issues such as data centers, water usage, redistricting, environmental concerns, taxes, etc.)?
I have been clear about my positions throughout my campaign, and my election would be a clear message that my constituents want that too. As such, I will fight for those positions while always maintaining an open door to my constituents. Political party will not supersede my responsibility to my constituents to listen and act as their elected representative.
