A fire early Sunday morning damaged a building in Springville that was supposed to house a new business offering robotics programs.

The Springville Fire Department told KSL that a call about the fire came in around 6 a.m. Sunday and was contained to one portion of the building, which is located around 1480 N. Main St. According to KSL, the department said it was possibly caused by an electrical issue.

The business, STEM Spot, had just received its business license and was set to begin official classes in September, owner Jerome Miles told the Daily Herald. Miles said they were planning on doing community events and classes in August to help get the word out.

“Our landlord actually handed it (the business license) to us the day we were both there to see the fire damage because they said they accidentally shipped it to his business address instead of mine,” he said. “It was kind of a surreal moment where that was going to be the thing that let us open, and it came the day that we realized we’d have to be delayed for a while.”

Miles said they are unsure about what caused the fire and are still working with insurance to figure out the extent and cost of the damage, adding that much of the damage is smoke-related. He estimated that they now won’t be able to open until later this year or early next year.

The school was planning to offer classes for people to learn how to design and build robots, Miles said. Students would then be able to compete against each other in various competitions at the end of the program.

Miles added that all the potential students had been on a waitlist while they were putting the final touches on the business, so no money had been received from customers yet.

Attempts by the Daily Herald to reach the fire department for comment were unsuccessful Monday.
