Eagle Mountain mother arrested in connection with death of 4-month-old baby
An Eagle Mountain mother was arrested in connection with the death of her 4-month-old son, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.
The mother, 32-year-old Raona Dorothy Mora, was arrested on suspicion of child abuse homicide.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, just before 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, deputies and paramedics were called to a home near Nolen Park in Eagle Mountain where the 4-month-old had suffered head trauma and was bleeding from his ear.
Paramedics began treatment on the baby, who shortly thereafter was flown away in a medical helicopter. The medical crew initially was flying the child to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, but because his condition was getting worse, they detoured and took him to Primary Children’s Hospital in Lehi.
“The baby was treated at the hospital, but his injuries were too severe and he died,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release. “Doctors said the boy’s injuries were not consistent with having been caused the way the mother described.”
According to arresting documents, Mora told deputies she fell asleep on the bedside while holding the boy and then fell to the ground on top of him.
The bed in question is a mattress and box spring that sits 18 inches from the ground, police noted.
Doctors told authorities the 4-month-old boy had sustained multiple skull fractures that resulted in an indentation of the baby’s skull and extensive brain hemorrhaging, according to arresting documents.
During an interview with police, Mora claimed that she had awoken on her back with the baby still in her arms, adding that the boy was then taken by the father. Mora said she got up and took the baby back from the father and attempted to soothe his crying, which was when she claimed to have noticed the baby going stiff and breathing oddly and observed blood coming from the baby’s ear, prompting her to call emergency services, the affidavit stated.
The boy’s mother was booked into the Utah County Jail and is being held without bail.
The case remains under investigation.
