Abe Kimball

Residing in the breathtaking mountains of Sanpete County, Abe Kimball shares his life with his wife and children. With a deep passion for art, Abe is dedicated to teaching and inspiring others through his work in public schools and at Snow College. Art has been a significant part of Abe’s life since he was a young child, observing various artists and, particularly, his artist-father who introduced him to the craft of lithography. Abe further honed his skills through printer training at the renowned Tamarind Institute in New Mexico. He appreciates the medium for its methodical yet unpredictable processes, finding inspiration in its unique qualities.

During his undergraduate studies, Abe delved into both visual arts and sociocultural anthropology, igniting a fascination with ethnographic research. This passion led him and his wife and daughter on a transformative journey to India, immersing themselves in the country’s rich artistic traditions and discovering new perspectives.

Abe’s artwork often focuses on marginalized communities and their material culture. His intention is to juxtapose remnants of these cultures with the purity of nature, using them as symbols of resilience and adaptation to life and the environment. While primarily engaged in printmaking, Abe also incorporates found objects into his sculptural-assemblages, giving new life to discarded items. His artistic process can be described as an idiosyncratic recontextualization of archaic subjects, breathing new meaning into forgotten narratives.

When discussing his artistic process, Abe refers to it as a form of participant observation with the physical world. He believes that our observations create layers of experience and that the gradual or sudden accumulation and destruction of this information can be transformative. It is through the convergence of disparate elements in our lives that true meaning emerges.

An open house reception to celebrate Abe Kimball’s artwork will take place from 6-8 p.m. on June 9. This is an opportunity for art enthusiasts and the community to engage with Abe’s captivating pieces, gaining a deeper understanding of his artistic vision and the stories he seeks to convey.

In Abe Kimball’s art, we find a harmonious blend of passion, skill, and introspection. Through his creative journey, he invites us to reflect on our own experiences, embrace the beauty of forgotten cultures, and find new meaning in the convergence of different aspects of our lives.
