After month’s stay in the hospital, Elder Holland returns home
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Sunday that Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has been released from the hospital following a month of care and healing.
“After an extended hospital stay, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is now recuperating at home. Elder Holland and his children are very grateful for the many prayers offered on his behalf during this health challenge and time of sorrow following the passing of Sister (Patricia) Holland. As his health improves, he looks forward to resuming active service in his ministry,” the statement said.
The past few months have been a bumpy road for Holland, particularly with his health and the death of his wife.
April
It was announced at the beginning of the Saturday session of the church’s general conference that Holland would not be in attendance as he and his wife were suffering from the effects of COVID-19.
A few days later, the church updated Holland’s health condition in a statement, adding that he recently began dialysis for a kidney condition.
“Consequently, the First Presidency has excused him from all church assignments and meetings for at least two months to allow his medical treatments and recovery to take full effect,” the statement said.
Holland had been announced as the April 28 commencement speaker at Southern Utah University in Cedar City. He was not be able to fulfill that assignment due to the health concerns, according to the university.
June
Holland was admitted to the hospital on June 7, after several days of being ill. He tested negative for COVID-19 and, after having other diagnostic tests done, returned home a week later.
Later that month, Holland announced on his Facebook page that he was easing back into work.
“After having been away from Church assignments for several weeks due to some serious health challenges, I am pleased to begin slowly returning to work. Pat and I have been touched by the cards, notes, thoughts, and especially by the prayers you have offered in our behalf. Your sweet gestures during this demanding time have reminded us that God watches over us, that we can always trust in Him, and that He very often answers our prayers through other people,” he wrote.
July
July is considered “family month” for General Authorities of the church, a time to be with family. But news came July 20 that Patricia Holland had died after a brief stint in the hospital. No reason was given for her being admitted to the hospital. Her funeral was held July 27 and she was buried in St. George the next day.
August
On Aug. 3, just six days after burying his spouse, the church announced that Holland had been admitted back into the hospital “for observation and treatment of ongoing health complications.”
Although he now has been released, members of the church, friends and family continue to show concern and offer prayers in Holland’s behalf as the church prepares for two meaningful moments for Holland, general conference and the open house and dedication of the St. George Utah Temple where he and his wife were sealed (married) for eternity.
