For months now, FantasyCon has had some pretty serious bragging rights. With just weeks to go until their inaugural convention, event staffers were gearing up to host the largest gathering of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" performers ever to appear at one convention.
Bringing Middle Earth to downtown Salt Lake hasn't been an easy feat for FantasyCon coordinators, but it's a task they said they couldn't pass up, especially due to the impact "The Lord of the Rings" author J.R.R. Tolkien had on the world of fantasy.
“Tolkien brought about fantasy,” said FantasyCon programming director Larry Curtis at a recent press conference. “Tolkien is the mountain that looms behind FantasyCon. [He] not only wrote the book of fantasy, but also in all that came after we owe a lot to him.”
In fitting tribute, FantasyCon is hosting Tolkien's great-grandson, Royd Tolkien, who has played a pivotal role in the continuation of his great-grandfather’s work, as well as an ever growing group of performers from the film adaptations of Tolkien's books.
The latest coup for the Con is today's announcement that "The Lord of the Rings" star Elijah Wood will be joining the hobbit gathering, as DJ for the event's kick-off party.
"We all know Elijah Wood for his role as Frodo in 'The Lord of the Rings' films, but most people don’t know that he’s also a really talented DJ,” said Josh Patel, FantasyCon founder, in a recent press release. “Elijah has a great love for music, and we’re absolutely thrilled that he is making the time to share this passion with our FantasyCon fans.”
Wood will be using his musical abilities to serve as a DJ at FantasyCon's kick-off party July 2 at The Complex (536 W. 100 South) in Salt Lake City, joined by his friend Zach Cowie as DJ Wooden Wisdom.
The party will run from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. and include opportunities for guests to mingle with some of the celebrities set to appear at FantasyCon. It is also set to feature a question and answer session with Wood himself.
The kick-off event is open to the public, though limited tickets are available at Smithstix.com. Pricing ranges from $20 for general event admission to $50 for VIP event tickets.
Though Wood will appear only as DJ at the kick-off event, other "The Lord of the Rings" castmates Sean Astin (Samwise 'Sam' Gamgee), Billy Boyd (Peregrin 'Pippin' Took) and John Rhys-Davies (Gimli), as well as "The Hobbit" actors Adam Brown (Ori), Graham McTavish (Dwalin), Jed Brophy (Nori), John Callen (Oin), Ken Stott (Balin), Peter Hambleton (Gloin), Sylvester McCoy (Radagast the Brown) and William Kircher (Bifur) will be in attendance at the convention itself.
FantasyCon tickets are now on sale and can be purchased at www.fantasycon.com/tickets. You can find more information on the various celebrities set to attend the convention by visiting this link, or heading over to fantasycon.com/celebrities.
