Sen. Mike Lee will give the Tea Party's response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech next week.
In an announcement released early Tuesday morning, the Tea Party Express organization announced that Utah's junior senator would join the ranks of Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., in giving the conservative group's rebuttal to the president's annual report to Congress on the state of the nation.
"Senator Mike Lee has been both a Tea Party hero for supporters across the nation, and a conservative leader in the Upper Chamber," said Amy Kremer, Tea Party Express chairwoman. "He has introduced tangible policy solutions to some of America's biggest problems. We are honored to have Senator Lee deliver Tea Party Express' fourth annual Tea Party response to the State of the Union Address."
Lee's senate office said the senator had no comment to give on giving the Tea Party's response.
Lee became more well-known on a national scale last fall during the 16-day government shutdown. While many gave credit for the shutdown to Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Tex., Lee has been labeled as Cruz's right-hand man through the ordeal, gaining him popularity among some conservative circles.
The Tea Party's response will air right after the Republican party's official response to the State of the Union. Utahns can watch the response live on the Tea Party express website, www.TeaPartyExpress.org.
