Chick-fil-A goes healthy with its nuggets
This week I reached out for Grilled — yes, grilled — Chicken Nuggets kids’ meal at America’s No. 2 chicken chain, Chick-fil-A, with 1,606 restaurants coast to coast.
You know Chick-fil-A. It’s the chicken-sandwich place that’s closed on Sundays so employees can rest, go to church or spend time with their families and friends. I’m guessing watching football is high on the list.
Much like with its chicken-breast sandwiches, Chick-fil-A makes no bones about the motive behind grilled nuggets — it’s to provide a lower-fat, more healthful option for children.
While other fast-food chains have started providing more healthful options in kids’ meals, they usually fiddle with side dishes and drinks, like apple slices and low-fat milk instead of fries and soda. The burger stays the same. But by introducing Grilled Chicken Nuggets, Chick-fil-A is cracking down hard on calories and fat in the entire meal.
Here’s the blueprint: six unbreaded grilled chicken pieces, a fruit cup or a squeeze pack of applesauce, and 1 percent milk.
Total calories: 260. Fat grams: 4. Dietary fiber: 1 g. Sodium: 945 mg. Carbs: 26 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $3.99. Your mileage may vary up or down.
More good news: Grilled nuggets are cut from whole white-meat chicken breasts. They’re real meat from one chicken, not glued ‘n’ chewed particleboard concoctions like at some other places, where a clown runs the show. Chick-fil-A’s grilled nuggets are mildly spiced with salt and pepper. I detected a mere hint of garlic.
The grilled nuggets are made for kids, but Chick-fil-A workers have been instructed not to give funny looks to grownups who ask for them. I expect these to be very popular with women on the move. Dipping sauces are available.
Here’s how healthful these grilled nuggets are: six deep-fried McNuggets at Mickey D’s pack 260 calories and 12 fat grams — not counting a side dish or drink. Comparing apples to apples, six Grilled Chicken Nuggets (just the nuggets) at Chick-fil-A have 110 calories and 1.5 fat grams.
Mind you, grilled doesn’t taste as good as deep-fried, in the world of chicken body parts. But Chick-fil-A has done a good job with these Grilled Chicken Nuggets. They’re juicy and tender, and, unless you want to shop for your kid’s school clothes in the big ‘n’ tall store, they’re a better choice.
Of course, Chick-fil-A still has breaded, fried nuggets and waffle fries for people who enjoy that sort of thing, which will be most people. But it’s nice to have choices. Especially healthful choices.
