Drive-Thru Gourmet: Don’t let Popeyes Ghost Pepper Wings scare you off

By Ken Hoffman - | Jan 15, 2015

This week I reached out for an order of Ghost Pepper Wings — I ain’t scared of no ghosts — at America’s No. 2 fried-chicken shack, Popeyes, with 2,315 restaurants from east to west and top to bottom.

Last year, Popeyes introduced Spicebox Chicken. It didn’t sell so hot, but now the company is upping the ante by welcoming one of the hottest peppers on Earth, the hellfire ghost pepper, to the fray.

Here’s the Ghost Pepper Wings breakdown: six wings marinated for 12 hours in a blend of peppers, including a “dash” of ghost pepper, then breaded and deep fried. Served with a buttermilk biscuit and a packet of buttermilk ranch dipping sauce. The spicy flavor comes from the marinade. The breading is regular Southern-style batter.

Total calories: 210 per wing. Fat grams: 14. Sodium: 410 mg. Carbs: 8 g. Dietary fiber: 1 g. Protein: 13 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $3.99.

The nutritional damage doesn’t include the ranch sauce, which pitches in an extra 150 calories and 15 fat grams to the box. It’s the fattest of all Popeyes sauces.

Take note: Unlike most of Popeyes wing boxes, the Ghost Pepper deal does not come with fries. It’s just wings ‘n’ a biscuit ‘n’ some dipping sauce.

So how hot are ghost peppers … and do Ghost Pepper Wings really contain the insanely hot pepper?

Let’s go to the Scoville scale, which measures the relative heat of peppers. The Scoville scale is not new; it was created by American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville in 1912, the same year the Titanic sank. Coincidence?

Ghost peppers ignite a smidge more than 1 million Scoville units. To give you an idea of how hot that is, cayenne peppers rate between 30,000 and 50,000 units. Chipotles are between 3,500 and 10,000 units. Poblanos are between 1,000 and 2,000 units. Sweet bell peppers don’t move the needle at all — they’re a big fat zero. You might as well eat a Snickers bar.

Ghost peppers are about 900 times hotter than Tabasco sauce.

So in my best Mr. Ed voice, I ask, “Willbuurrr, how hot are Popeyes Ghost Pepper Wings?

Not to worry. You won’t be a fire-breathing dragon after eating them. If you listen closely to the Popeyes commercial, Annie says there’s a “dash” of “mysterious” ghost pepper in the marinade.

A dash may be pushing it. Popeyes is a family-style chicken restaurant. Children are big-time customers. It isn’t one of those biker wing joints that brag their wings are so hot you’ll need to sign a legal release before they’ll serve you.

Any more than a dash — if even a dash — of ghost peppers, and drive-thru customers who sneak one on the way home would have to stop the car and drink the radiator fluid. Ghost peppers are what they add to wings on daredevil shows like “Man v. Food,” where chubby eating machines are reduced to tears.

Just like Popeyes Beer Can Chicken wasn’t really beer can chicken, but instead merely a disappointing fried facsimile with a hint of brew in the breading, Ghost Pepper Wings aren’t anywhere near as hot as threatened.

In fact, Ghost Pepper Wings taste pretty much the same as Popeyes regular spicy-fried chicken. That’s a compliment. We love us some Popeyes Spicy breading.

Starting at $4.32/week.
