Orem Police identified the person killed in Friday’s officer-involved shooting as 17-year-old Jacob E. Albrethsen.
The department disclosed Albrethsen’s name Sunday after speaking with the boy’s family.
Albrethsen was a student at Orem High School, the department stated in its Facebook post. The police have spoken with Alpine School District, which will have counselors available for students.
The teen was killed during an incident Friday afternoon near the 100 block of North Paradise Drive in central Orem.
According to previous reports, officers responded to reports of a family problem at 2:45 p.m. The officers reportedly deployed a Taser when the male approached them with a knife.
The Taser was ineffective in stopping Albrethsen. Officers then fired shots at the boy.
Officers used CPR on Albrethsen. He was then taken in critical condition to the hospital where he reportedly died at 4:20 p.m.
In its Facebook post, Orem Police stated the matter was “a tragedy anyway you look at it.”
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officers and their families as well as Jacobs’ family,” the post stated.
Police indicated there was more work to do in the case and that it appreciated the public’s support and patience.
