Kathryn (Kate) Smith Holmstead

Apr 13, 2023

1932 — 2023

Kathryn (Kate) Smith Holmstead was born on January 15, 1932, and died Thursday, April 6, 2023. (Mom got her wish granted) Dad has been gone for four-plus years, and she wanted to go Home. We are sure she and her sweetheart Hal are dancing with the stars (their real family and friends…), those who were the stars in their lives that have gone before!

Kate’s happy and free to be out of pain. She fell and broke her hip and ribs on March 31 and was never strong enough to do the difficult rehab. She was able to spend the last two days in her own home that Dad built, as family and friends stopped by to tell her how she would be missed.

She joined Dad and will be there with each other to help their large posterity prepare themselves for the Savior’s Second Coming.

Hal and Kate have five children: Gordon Hal (Claudia Hall), Jan (Randy) Robinson, Lori (Doug) Berry, Kurt (Karen Hansen), Jay (Sondra Hafen), 32 grandchildren and their spouses, 91 great grands and five great, great grands for a total of 133 and spouses. Their large posterity is their greatest treasure

Mom’s parents were Ivon Adams Smith and Samuel Max Smith. Kate was the 2nd daughter with eight siblings (one brother). The oldest was Barbara (Dolph Jolley), JoAnn (deceased) (Loyal Iverson), Carma (deceased) (Kent Beck), Maxine (deceased), Linda (Frank Manning), Max, her brother (Alyson Evans), Judy (Eldon Harward), and Vickie (Roger Jensen).

Kate was a born leader. She was a president of many things; 1. President of the Utah Regional Ballet 2. President of the Utah Pageants of the Arts Guild 3. Young Womenás and Relief Society President and a teacher extraordinary for those organizations.

Mom served her lifetime in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One sister called her the cherry on top of every organization she ever served. Everything she touched turned to gold, and she has influenced thousands of lives for good.

She loved to cook and sew and share with anyone who needed a little joy in their life. Her favorites were her homemade breads, pies, rolls, turkey stuffing, and noodles. She and Dad served at the Mt. Timpanogos Temple for 13 years. When the temple was dedicated, the neighborhood was invited to be in the Celestial Room with the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. They were simply a celestial couple, wonderful examples to all of what real love is like. They certainly were not perfect, but they were perfect for each other. Dad died just months shy of their 70th Anniversary. They were role models of compassion, a beautiful couple who would give their best in everything. They were generous, giving, kind and humble. They loved people, and others loved them. They had a group of 16 couples that met together monthly for over 60 years. They were called “The Group.” Their friendship, loyalty, and love for each other’s families was rare and worthy of emulation. One of the greatest lessons they taught us was the value of family and friendships. They taught us all to work hard, play harder, and be dependable in everything we committed to.

Mom’s home was her castle, and Dad had his office there, so we knew our parents were always accessible and we were a priority. Mom served as a pink lady at the hospital in American Fork for six years. She loved serving and bringing sunshine wherever she went. Mom took pride in her appearance and always looked classy. She never quit caring how she looked. To say she will leave a big hole in the lives of our growing family is an understatement.

Her parents, husband, parents-in-law, a grandson, Hap Holmstead, and two granddaughters, Harper and Lola, preceded her in death.

We express love and appreciation to those who cared for and served Mom, especially these last few years as her health declined. Love You, Mom!
