Regaining form: Lone Peak puts it all together in taking a resounding 41-0 win over Timpview

If Krew Robinson’s opening 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown served as any indication, it was that Lone Peak was intent on turning things around in a big way.
And that intention came to fruition with the Knights racing by a heavily-talented Timpview team 41-0 in front of their home crowd on Friday.
From Robinson’s score on, the Knights executed a relatively flawless 48 minutes of play with the defense leading the charge in snuffing out most everything the T-birds threw its way. Multiple interceptions, sacks and stalemates of most rushing attempts confounded a T-bird offense that never really even sniffed a scoring opportunity throughout.
“We’ve kind of started slow like this whole year. So to really get started from the beginning–I mean, you saw what we did,” said Lone Peak senior defensive back Gabe Harmon. “We played our (second team) the entire second half, and we scored 40 points in the first half. So I think it was big just to kind of get things going right from the start like we haven’t done very well at the beginning of the year.”
Indeed Lone Peak was surprisingly at the other end of the lopsided scoring margins against visiting IMG Academy three weeks ago, which is very much the case for just about every team facing off against the elite Florida-based athletics academy. The loss was a bit jarring for a Lone Peak squad used to being able to compete against the very best in the country in recent years in taking the 59-3 loss.
Then last week it was another national powerhouse flush with 4 and 5-star talent, Las Vegas-based Bishop Gorman, handing the Knights a 38-14 loss.
But as Lone Peak has proved in recent years, it’s able to prove resilient and learn from its mistakes.
“I was really nervous after the IMG game that they were going to hang their heads because they beat us as bad as any team we’ve ever played,” said Lone Peak coach Bart Brockbank. “I thought we responded with the Bishop game, and that game was tied 7-7 after the first quarter, before Bishop was able to beat us by a lot of points at the end, leading up to tonight’s game where I’m so proud of our boys and how they were able to respond to all of it. We have a confident bunch of boys on this team and it was a good win for us tonight.”
As is always the case, what’s shown on Friday is the work that’s put in during the days leading up to it, and for Lone Peak, the focus and work was focused and consistent during every day of practice.
“I think this whole week everyone was just fired up. We knew what we had to do coming into region play this next week,” Harmon said. “And this game right here is what we needed to start off region play like we need to. I think everyone just knew that we needed to come out and play like we know we can.”
Harmon helped lead a defense that all but shutdown a Timpview offensive arsenal that features standouts like heavily-recruited wideout Dennis Tuaone, who had all of Harmon and his teammate’s attention throughout the week and into Friday’s win.
“He’s a stud, so we knew we had to shut him down, and we did,” Harmon said regarding his team’s coverage of Tuaone. “That was pretty much our whole game plan to shut him down, and everyone did their job.”
Also doing their job was a Lone Peak offense that has sputtered a bit out of the gates this season. Receiver Jaxon Cloward stood tallest, catching two touchdown passes of 28 and 20 yards, respectively. Proving calm in the pocket in delivering most of the passes was senior quarterback Cruz Christensen, who took advantage of the prime positions the Knight defense put him and his offense in throughout the evening.
“We’ve spent a lot of time working to get our special teams and our offense going, and of course our defense, too, so tonight it all came together,” Brockbank said. “I’m proud of the boys for sticking with it and executing what we’ve been working on and not hanging their heads because of the tough losses we’ve taken this year. This is a good win for us to get with the Corner Canyon game coming up next week, for sure.”
With the win Lone Peak improves to 3-2 on the season while Timpview falls to 2-3.
