Valley Top 5: Top two Utah Valley boys hoops teams set for showdown

Each week, Daily Herald sports experts Jared Lloyd, Darnell Dickson and Brian Preece rank the top five teams in the Utah Valley in boys and girls basketball and boys and girls wrestling (records as of Jan. 13):

Boys Basketball

1. Orem (11-3)

Tigers can’t look past a talented Wasatch squad on Tuesday.

2. Timpview (11-3)

T-Birds have epic meeting with Orem on Friday at the Thunderdome.

3. Westlake (10-4)

Thunder with big win against Skyridge to open Region 3 play.

4. Payson (12-2)

Lions travel to Timpanogos for Region 8 showdown on Tuesday.

5. Timpanogos (12-3)

T-Wolves 2-0 in Region 8 after edging out city rival Mountain View.

Girls Basketball

1. Payson (12-1)

The Lion defense was in top form as Payson won its seventh straight, routing Provo.

2. Wasatch (12-2)

The Wasps ripped through two tough road games with wins at Salem Hills and Timpview.

3. Salem Hills (13-3)

The Skyhawks rebounded from the tough defeat to Wasatch by defeating Springville.

4. Provo (13-2)

How much did the Bulldogs learn as they struggled to make plays against Payson?

5. Lone Peak (9-5)

The Knights bounced back from a loss at Copper Hills to knock off PG to start Region 3 action.

Boys Wrestling

1. Westlake

Thunder were third at the Rockwell Rumble.

2. Spanish Fork

The Dons finished fifth at the Rockwell Rumble.

3. Wasatch

Young Wasps poised to contend in 5A wrestling wars.

4. Mountain View

Bruins have strong showing in both the varsity and JV Rumble.

5. Timpanogos

Though down in the standing at the Rockwell Rumble, the Timberwolves are still formidable.

Wasps win the Rockwell Rumble title.

2. Cedar Valley

Aviators finish fourth at the Rockwell Rumble.

3. Westlake

Rarick sisters Tevia and Keilikki win Rumble titles.

4. Salem Hills

Skyhawks still a trophy contender in 5A.

5. Maple Mountain

Golden Eagles were 17th place at the Rockwell Rumble.
