Here’s a look at the top high school girls soccer talent in Utah Valley this year:

Offensive MVP: Rachel McCarthy, Sr. MF, American Fork

The potent Caveman attack was at its best when McCarthy was attacking off the wings. She could be a dynamic scorer (11 goals), but she was also phenomenal at swinging the ball into dangerous positions for her teammates (13 assists). Her speed, foot skills and finishing ability was an impressive combination.

Defensive MVP: Anna Pinegar, Jr. D, Timpview

Pinegar set the tone for the Thunderbirds as she kept the defense organized for her team. She was relentless in chasing down opposing attackers, leading the way for Timpview as the T’Birds allowed only eight goals in Region 7 play (winning the league title) and only two goals in a run to the 5A semifinals.

Goalkeeper MVP: Chelsea Peterson, Sr. GK, Orem

Things were never easy for the Tigers during their run to the 4A state title game as Orem played in four straight overtime contests. One of the big keys was the play of Peterson in goal as she was a dynamic presence. Not only did she make saves, she was consistently one of the leaders for the Tigers as she kept her teaming believing it could win no matter what.

Coach of the Year: Shantel Jolley, Lone Peak

The Knights had been so close to winning a title in girls soccer but had never been able to reach the top. After having recently been overshadowed by the success of rival American Fork, this was the season that Jolley was able to get Lone Peak a win over the Cavemen and then an impressive run to the 6A state title.
