The Western Athletic Conference announced the bracket for the 2023 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament. Utah Valley will be the No. 3 seed and will meet No. 4 Seattle U on Wednesday, May 24, at 10:00 a.m. MT/9:00 a.m. MST.

“First and foremost, we are excited to advance to the postseason and to earn the bye as a 3-seed. Anything can happen in postseason baseball, and we are excited to go play the best baseball we can in Mesa at the WAC Tournament,” said UVU head coach Eddie Smith.

It will mark the third time UVU has been the No. 3 seed. In 2014, the Wolverines advanced to the Championship, where they dropped both games to Sacramento State. In 2016, they returned to the Championship, where they beat No. 1 seeded Seattle U 4-0 to advance to the team’s only NCAA Tournament.

Grand Canyon won the regular season and will be the No. 1 seed, followed by No. 2 seed Sam Houston. Seattle U is the No. 4 seed. Abilene Christian, UT Arlington, UTRGV, and California Baptist are the five through eight seeds.

The 2023 Tournament will return to Hohokam Stadium for the eighth consecutive year. The defending champion New Mexico State did not qualify.

All games will be streamed on ESPN+ in the United States and on WAC International outside the United States. GoUVU.com will have an audio-only stream of UVU games.

UVU baseball wraps up regular season with win at UT-Arlington

Utah Valley split the two games played Saturday afternoon against UT Arlington at Clay Gould Ballpark.

UTA (26-27, 16-14) won the completion of Friday’s game on a walk-off single before UVU (31-22, 16-12) won the final game of the series.

Garrett Broussard hit two home runs. The first came in the eighth inning of game one before going yard again in the fourth inning of the finale.

“Today’s win was a total team effort. There were a lot of contributors, and the energy level was elite,” said UVU head coach Eddie Smith.

In the first game, the Mavericks took a 5-3 lead as they moved into the bottom of the seventh inning. The rain and lightning suspended the game after a four-hour delay with two outs in the seventh.

The two teams came back Saturday morning to finish the game. Broussard’s two-run homer game came in the eighth inning to tie the game at 5-5.

UTA put a pair of runners on base before Cole Sumbler singled to left for a walk-off single to score Wilson Galvan.

Mitch Mueller threw 1.1 innings, allowing one hit. UVU starter Logan Gerling went 4.0 innings, giving up four hits and one earned run. Devin Smith (3-2) was credited with the loss despite 1.2 innings of two-hit ball.

In Game 2, the Wolverines surged in front in the top of the fourth and Patrick Mills hit a home run in the seventh. UVU now has 58 home runs as a team, which is second in all-time in the D1 era. The 2010 team hit 79 homers for the program high.

The Wolverines finish the regular season 31-22 and 16-12 in WAC games. They finished 9-4 against teams from Texas, with series wins in each series. UVU had series wins over first-time opponents Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, and UT Arlington.

Smith said, “Texas is and has always been one of the premier talent pools for baseball in the country. You come down here, and it’s an incredible game day atmosphere. Nobody expects a team from Utah to be able to compete with Texas schools, but it says a lot about our guys. The team came together with a dream and a vision to accomplish these sorts of things, and they have worked hard together to make it happen.”

Wolverine men’s golf finishes 10th at National Golf invitational

Joseph Glenn finished in a tie for 10th to lead the Utah Valley men’s golf team to a 10th place team finish at the Golfweek National Golf Invitational at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona.

The tournament wraps up a historic season for the Wolverines. Utah Valley won three team titles and recorded two runner-up finishes. The Wolverines finished in the top-3 six times. UVU also had five individual titles on the season. UVU’s Brady McKinlay won four straight individual titles during the season and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. UVU’s appearance in the Golfweek National Golf Invitational is the first-ever postseason team showing in team history.

Utah Valley shot a final-round 16-over-par 304 on Sunday to finish 10th with a three-round score of 11-over-par 875 (286-285-304). Texas State won the NGI team title with a 7-under-par 857 (285-280-292).
