The Fall Event at Skyline took place from September 17 – 19, 2021 at the Skyline Eventing Park in Mt Pleasant. The prestigious 3 day horse show is a combination of jumping, dressage and cross-country competitions. Rider and horse compete together to compete in all 3 disciplines.

Ominous skies above the #5 water feature on the cross country course soon erupted into a cold, hard rain with lightning and fierce wind that had competitors scrambling for cover at Sunday’s competition.

The Event at Skyline in Mt Pleasant takes place twice yearly in May and September, offering Introductory through Intermediate/Preliminary levels.

As described by the FEI, “The Olympic sport of Eventing is the most complete combined competition discipline recognized by the FEI. Sometimes described as an equestrian triathlon, Eventing demands considerable experience in all branches of equitation.

Kayla Dumler, a student from Grand Canyon University in Arizona, drove 9 hours to compete in the Event at Skyline. Dumler, pictured here with her equine partner Ferris, is from the state of Washington.

Eventing originated as a military competition which tested officers and horses in challenges that could occur on or off duty. It also provided a basis to compare training standards between the cavalries of different countries. The modern competition comprises dressage, cross-country and jumping on consecutive days. The competitor rides the same horse throughout the three phases.

Cross-country is the highlight, testing the speed, stamina and jumping ability of the horse, as well as the rider’s knowledge of pace and the use of his horse. The course will have between 25 and 45 specially constructed jumps over solid obstacles such as logs, woodpiles and stone walls, with water and ditches increasing the technical difficulty.”

Leslie Sanders and equine partner Contessa from Kamas, Utah prepare for the cross country competition. ” Contessa was such a star this weekend. I was going to quit after it started raining so hard but we hung in and …took second place by one tenth of a point” Sanders later reflected.

Two weekend’s ago competition was the latest at Mt Pleasant’s Skyline Eventing Park, a course designed by James Atkinson who has created some of the most beautiful and prestigious eventing courses in the whole country.

The 3 day eventing competition is open to the public for viewing the various competitions.
